Most of the President's Day App Sales we posted last week are still going on today, so if you didn't grab one of those games or apps yet, you might want to think about doing so while the holiday weekend is still on. But there are also a number of other sales that have popped up over the weekend, so here are a few more:

So there's a few more options for you. So many great apps for cheap or free out there these days -- if you don't have something to play with or use on iOS, you're not looking hard enough!

Rogue Amoeba on creating the look of Piezo

Posted in Apps, News by Mike Schramm. Published February 16th, 2012

Christa Mrgan has published an interesting post at Rogue Amoeba about developing the look and feel of that company's Piezo recording software. Rogue Amoeba is known for simple, intelligent designs. It's fascinating to see how the company works from beginning to end, first defining the app's functions, then wireframing and prototyping to get everything right.

The article describes the influences that went into Piezo's look and feel, from the sublime (Piezo's look was inspired by a beautiful old audio unit) to the practical (a handle on the square icon). It's interesting to see Rogue Amoeba's commitment to making something special.

WinZip for iOS: No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you

Posted in Apps, News by Steven Sande. Published February 16th, 2012

During the nine years I spent in Windows Hell[TM] at IBM, WinZip was on every machine I used. The app performs a function similar to OS X's compress capability, letting shove a group of files into a single compassed file or unpack a zipped file or folder. As of this morning, those who have iOS devices and WinZip on a PC can be happy, as the official WinZip app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch is available.

Yeah, it's like a trip down memory lane ... although for me it's more like an unnerving flashback. But if you share a lot of .zip files with your friends and co-workers, you're going to doing a happy dance. You can open .zip files and .zip attachments from the iOS Mail app, browse and view .zip files, open encrypted .zip files, copy the contents of .zip files to the iOS clipboard, and more. It does not appear that this first iteration of WinZip for iOS will let you create new .zip files from documents or photos on your iOS devices.

I'm now wondering if we'll start seeing more venerable Windows apps on iOS, like Lotus 123, WordPerfect, or Microsoft FrontPage ...

This week, I'll round up the latest rumors of the next-generation iPad, talk about some fascinating new products coming from device manufacturers, demo a few iOS apps live, and introduce a video unboxing and review by one of the TUAW TV Live and Talkcast regulars, Paul "Harumph" Gans.

Below, you'll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream App. It's a universal app and is wonderful on an iPad, both for viewing and participating in the chat.

AppCartel offers new crowdfunding opportunity for developers

Posted in Apps, News by Victor Agreda, Jr.. Published February 15th, 2012

There's a lot more to building a business with your app idea than simply building the app. Having seen great apps wither on the vine due to bad marketing or poor planning, it's nice to see fresh efforts among developers who aim to enable great apps to find their market. AppCartel is a crowdfunding effort to pool resources for developers, allowing them access to a promotional team and other resources, plus money to build and launch their apps.

In fact, if you've got a team ready to make a great app, AppCartel wants to hear from you. If you've simply got an idea, or you don't know how to actually create an app, this isn't for you. AppCartel is looking for teams needing funding for their project, which should be ready to enter development.

I spoke to the creator of AppCartel, Dane Baker (also the guy behind Villian, a successful app company itself but otherwise not connected to AppCartel) about the effort. He said, "Funding is really only part of the equation for success. It's a large part, but only part. The other big piece is promotion, getting your app and company out there. Rather than just providing a page for you on our site and calling it a day, AppCartel has an internal promo team of social media gurus and marketers to promote our app projects to the world."

According to Baker, AppCartel is accepting applications and will choose among projects based on developer team skill, experience and project quality. Full disclosure: I have been asked to serve in an advisory role on the board, in an effort to help developers understand how to pitch to the media. It is my sincere hope we can help everyone understand first what it takes to make great apps, and then how to tell the world about those apps. If you're interested in applying, hit up the link to AppCartel and let them know.

Spotify adds support for 320 kbps music streaming

Posted in Apps, News by Kelly Hodgkins. Published February 14th, 2012

Spotify brought its music streaming service to the US last year, and both the desktop and mobile apps have been well received. On the desktop, the service delivers a high-quality 320 kbps audio stream, but the mobile app cuts that in half with its 160 kbps stream. Thanks to a recent update, iOS users with an ear for music can now select an "Extreme" setting that'll match the output of the desktop app. Most users with stock headphones won't notice the difference, but those with a pair of high-end ear buds will enjoy the new 320 kbps stream.

Spotify's new Extreme feature isn't stream only, it also applies to sync which is useful if you like to have your music on your device. Of course, you will need a rock-solid data connection and robust allotment of data to take advantage of this new mobile feature. Right now this 320 kbps setting is an iOS exclusive and is not yet available for Android or Windows Phone.

Apps for Valentine’s Day

Posted in Apps, News by Victor Agreda, Jr.. Published February 14th, 2012

Today's smartphones are, by their nature, quite versatile. It's impossible to guide every lover on Valentine's Day to the app for their particular needs, because despite the requisite "flowers, chocolate, *something*" expectations, we all do it differently. I tried to round up a few apps that might appeal to just about anyone who participates in tomorrow's festivities. Happy Valentine's Day, if that's your thing!

Going out to eat

If you're trying to get a reservation, one of the fastest ways to check and make a reservation is with OpenTable (hopefully your area's restaurants are on-board with their system). If you're out and looking for somewhere to eat, I still use one of the first big breakout apps from the App Store, UrbanSpoon. Of course, you can always ask Siri, but if you don't have a 4S, try Yelp.

Going out to find someone to love

Personally I've had a great experience with OKCupid, probably the least skeevy of the online dating sites and its app is quite excellent. There's also Skout, which I haven't tried, but it has good reviews and features a location-based singles finder in the app.

There are also most specific love-finding apps like Grindr for the gay community and Cupidtino for fans of Apple stuff.

Buying a gift

Don't know what to buy your sweetheart? Apps like El Gifto, and Thoughtful (not yet available in app form) will help you answer that question by asking a few background questions first. You can use Red Laser to comparison shop (you hopeless romantic, you) or Giftiki to pool your money with friends -- the gift that says "I love you enough to beg our friends for money."

Setting the mood

Yeah we've all heard of Pandora by now, but lately I'm digging the DJ-powered Slacker Radio for less repetition and a wider set of music. Slacker also has several romance-themed stations set up, like this one called Love Songs.

If you subscribe to Rdio or Spotify, you can build your own playlist for all-night romance without commercial interruption. My personal preference is Rdio, but it'll be fun to see all the romantic songs being played in Spotify on the night of V-Day thanks to Spotify's in-your-face social mechanisms.

Having fun

Spending a night at home? Try Scene It? Romance Movies for some lighthearted fun -- although it could be embarrassing if you never watch romance movies. If you want to reminisce about the times you had together and snapped with Instagram, check out Lovestagram, which will bring up all the pics of you and your loved one taken using the social photo service. iKamasutra is the App Store-approved Kama Sutra for the iPhone. You could just as easily buy the real deal in ebook form, but the app provides easy navigation to all your favorite, um, love pretzels.

Got any other apps you recommend for Valentine's Day? If you need to call a florist, I'd suggest Google or Siri -- and that you do it fast.
